Welcome!

Welcome to Year 1! We are all so excited to get back to learning in school and hope your child is looking forward to the new term.

We hope you are getting familiar with the routines regarding safety around the school site. We have continued to increase our systems in school for safety and hygiene and are carrying out extra cleaning of the environment and resources, as well as having extra handwashing sessions throughout the day. We have been very impressed how the children are becoming more independent at this.

As ever this term is a busy one, packed full of exciting learning. Within this curriculum newsletter there is some key information to help you support your child’s learning.

PE

Johnson Class’ PE days this term are Wednesday and Friday.

Kapoor Class’ PE days this term are Wednesday and Friday.

Please can your child bring suitable PE kit to school on Monday. PE kits can stay in class all week and will come home after the last PE lesson of the week.

Indoor PE: Children will need green shorts and a plain t-shirt in their house colour. Gym and Dance is done in bare feet. Children will need trainers or plimsolls for indoor games.

Outdoor PE: Green jogging bottoms and t-shirt, and a tracksuit or spare jumper for colder days.  Children will also need trainers. The weather is getting increasingly colder it is therefore essential that they have warm layers to put on. Please also remember spare socks for children who are wearing tights.

Reading

We expect children to have daily opportunities to read to, or with, someone at home, as well as independently. Each Friday, children will be sent home with the following:

  • RWI book: This is a text that the children have been reading regularly in class to build fluency. They should be able to read this to you independently with minimal mistakes.

  • Book Bag Book: This is a text that is based upon the sounds that children have been reading in class. As such, the children should be able to apply their phonics to knowledge to read all the words within the book with minimal support.

  • Library Book: This is a text that the children have selected based upon their interest. These books are not based on prior phonics knowledge and should be shared with, or read by, an adult.

These books should be returned to school the following Thursday to be changed.

All children have a reading diary, which they should bring to school in their book bag every day. Please record your child’s reading (as well as any additional comments) in the reading diary including the date and, where appropriate, page numbers. To build fluency, children should read a text a minimum of three times. As such, school reading books will only be changed once per week on a Friday. We will check the reading record is completed regularly.

Curriculum

STEAM

For our STEAM project this term our STEAM focus is Maths and we will be answering the question ‘Can I create, carry out an experiment and present my data in a variety of different ways?’ We will be undertaking and presenting investigations showing properties of different materials, the most effective materials for keeping out light and the most appropriate material for making a window covering.

To help with our STEAM project we would like to ask for a voluntary contribution of £2 (made via parent pay) per child to help us fund our exciting STEAM project. Your donations will be used to buy resources for our STEAM project.

Maths

Our first Maths unit will be looking at the concepts of length, height and weight and comparing these.  The children will then begin to explore counting and comparing sets of objects and learn how to apply the greater than, less than and equal to symbols to represent these expressions.   Our Maths lessons will then progress to learning about composition of numbers to 10, how these can be partitioned and combined.  The children will use representations such as the part whole model to support their learning of this.

English

Our first English unit will be looking at the story ‘The Scarecrows’ Wedding,’ the children will be identifying verbs and nouns within the story and writing a simple sentence. They will also be looking at ‘Room on the Broom’ and writing a recount about the adventures of the witch.

Computing

Throughout this term children will learn to develop their understanding of technology and how it can help us. The children will become familiar with different components of a computer by developing their keyboard and mouse skills. They will also consider how to use technology responsibly.

HRE

During our HRE lessons this term, we will be focusing on health and wellbeing. As part of this unit, the children will be learning about healthy lifestyles including physical wellbeing, mental health, ourselves, growing and changing and how to safeguard ourselves.

Music

Using the Charanga scheme the children will be looking at the song ‘Hey you!’ Throughout these lessons the children will be experimenting with different instruments including the Glockenspiel.  They will also be looking at a variety of different music understanding composition and improvisation.

PE

Indoor - The children will be doing gymnastics where they will be learning to travel, jump and balance. The children will be thinking about how they can safely travel in a range of different ways.

Outdoor - Children will be focusing on playground games. They will be learning to demonstrate teamwork, spatial awareness and to travel safely and effectively. They will put this into practice by playing a range of different games involving moving around an area safely, listening to others and taking turns.
