GLF Schools was founded in 2012 in order to enable the federation of Glyn School (an academy in 2011) and Danetree Junior School. Together, we began our journey to become a MAT of more than 1000 talented staff working with over 10,000 children in 40 schools across 5 regions in southern England.

Welcome!

Welcome to Shakespeare Class and to year six! We are really looking forward to all of the learning that this term will bring!

Here is some key information to make you aware of our areas of learning for this term, as well as some key dates and things you may need to know going forward.

PE

Our PE days this term are Wednesday (outdoor) and Friday (indoor) and children will need full PE kit with them on these days, including trainers. In our outdoor lessons, we will be developing skills towards playing a game of tag rugby. This will involve attacking, defending, movement across the pitch and tactics in a game. During our indoor lessons, we will be focusing on some health and fitness skills as well as some theory in tracking health and fitness changes.

Writing

This term begins with a focus on the text ‘The Island’ by Armin Greder. This is a picture book designed for older children and explores many themes such as acceptance and empathy. The children will write a narrative piece from the perspective of a man who washes up on the island in search of a home, using the skills of figurative language, dialogue and devices to build up atmosphere. After this, the children will be working on a persuasive rebuttal piece, based on ‘The True Story of the Three Little Pigs’. This is a very funny and entertaining text which will enable the children to write their own persuasive speeches from the perspective of the ‘Big Bad Wolf’.

Reading

Our first focus text, as with writing, will be ‘The Island’ and the children will learn about the themes in the text, as well as how this piece of fiction links to events in the wider world. After this, we will move onto working on the book ‘Rooftoppers’ by Katherine Rundlell. As with previous years, children are expected to have opportunities to read a variety of texts with or to an adult at home as well as being provided with opportunities to read throughout the school day.

Maths

In maths, we have started the term by looking at the part-whole relationship and how we can use this to develop understanding of finding missing parts of equations. We will then be breaking down equations even further by looking at the most efficient methods for calculation and how the children can use existing knowledge to calculate using numbers up to one million.

STEAM

In STEAM this term our big question is ‘Can I create, carry out an experiment and present my data in a variety of different ways?’ The children will be working with problem solving in terms of electrical circuits, experimenting with changing components and discussing the effect that this has on the final product. We have a very exciting visitor coming into school on the 7th October, an engineer from the Science Oxford Centre, who is experienced in this field of work and will help the children to understand how to use these new components in a functional way.
